Description
Promoting self-determination (SD), or teaching students to take control of their life, is becoming a hallmark of providing full and complete special education services. Although SD has been defined by many different authors (e.g., Abery, 1994; Field, 1996; Martin & Marshall, 1995; Wehmeyer, 1992), a consensus definition accepted by many experts in the field is: A model of SD with research-based, definitional concepts typically includes the following components: (a) choice making; (b) decision making; (c) problem-solving; (d) goal setting and attainment; (e) self-advocacy; (f) self-efficacy; (g) self-knowledge and understanding; (h) self-observation, evaluation, and reinforcement; (i) independence, risk taking, and safety; (j) self-instruction; and (k) internal locus of control (Wehmeyer, 1998). Although initially much was written that defined and described SD (Abery, Rudrud, Arndt, Schauben, & Eggebeen, 1995; Deci, 1975; Field, 1996; Field & Hoffman, 1994; Martin & Marshall, 1995; Wehmeyer, Kelchner, & Richards, 1996), recently there is emerging research evidence that documents the effectiveness of interventions to promote SD with different groups of individuals with disabilities (Algozzine, Browder, Karvonen, Test, & Wood, 2001; Copeland, Hughes, Agran, Wehmeyer, & Fowler, 2002; Powers, Turner, Phillips, & Matuszewski, 2001; Wehmeyer, Palmer, Agran, Mithaug, & Martin, 2000; Zhang, 2001).
